PyEChess is an application combining a game datbase with an Email
client; intended as a tool for playing email chess games
PyEChess grew out of frustration with existing tools which either didn't work very well, were not available for Unix or proved too tempting to use a Chess Engine.
The first attempt at building a GUI tool in Python started pretty well (see the screenshot) but the limitations of Tkinter and the behaviour of X styling suggested there was a better way.
Version 1 is getting ready to go with a new graphic toolkit.
Feature List
A list of features forming the basis of the product- POP/IMAP support and probably others (like yahoo/hotmail accounts) for sending and receiving moves, etc. Tools to help you manage large move histories
- Analysis extensive analysis capabilities to make it easier to pickup a game after you spent a long time planning a move or simply help you investigate positions, thematic variations or opening theory.
- Game database easy cataloging of played games either to help organising tournament competition or just manage your own games. Games can be entered directly as PGN
- User Styling simple techniques for customising the tool to your own preferences; includes colours and pieces
- Text only generally all configuration (including game archives) stored as text files - no binary data
